General Information: The Zee Zee plant, has wide and attractive, dark green leaves with unique leaf patterning. It also boasts many favorable traits for use in homes, offices and commercial spaces. The Zee Zee plant tolerates neglect, is somewhat drought tolerant and will grow in low-light conditions where other plants will not. It will burn if placed in direct, hot sun. It's waxy, smooth leaves reflect sunlight and brighten rooms. Zee Zee grow slowly especially in low light and colder conditions and most Zamioculcas will reach a maximum height of about three feet. They will continue to spread in the pot they are planted in and should be transplanted or, the rhizomes divided once they cover the surface of the pot.
Members of the genus Araceae will potentially flower mid-summer to early autumn but the flowers are quite small and not super attractive. Zamioculcas is a genus of flowering plants in the family Araceae. The genus Araceae contains a single species Zamioculcas zamiifolia. Zee Zee or ZZ is native to eastern Africa, from southern Kenya to northeastern South Africa.
We are often asked if certain plants, such as the ZZ are poisonous. The answer is simply yes, but most plants are poisonous. If a human eats an entire head of lettuce chances are they will get sick. That being said, he ZZ plant is mildly poisonous to cats, dogs and humans if directly ingested. The toxicity of the Zee Zee is derived from the calcium oxalate crystals located in the sap. Claims of Zee Zee being "highly toxic" are completely overblown. The likelihood of a pet actually being poisoned by this plant is quite rare.
Plant Care: Zee Zee are one of the easiest house plants to care for. Because of their drout tolerance they are a wonderful choice for those that travel often. Zee Zee are highly susceptible to root rot and does not like to be over watered. Yellowing and mushy leaves or branches falling over are signs of over watering and root rot.Watering should be every 7 to 14 days in most climates. Never water your Zee Zee if the surface of the soil is still moist. Zee Zee prefer and will grow best in bright filtered light. Any place in a room that does not get direct hot sun is best. Never place a Zee Zee in a window that receives direct sun as it will burn. Zee Zee prefer tempatures in the 65 to 75 degree range much like humans. Continued tempatures below 55 degrees will stunt growth.
